Counterfeit

Fortune Jack Poker

Your hand is said to be counterfeited when it is made less valuable by a card that hits the board. Often, the counterfeiting card that hits the board is of the same rank or suit as one of your hole cards.

Example

Your Hand
Seven of ClubsEight of Clubs
Opponent
Seven of SpadesJack of Spades
The Flop
Nine of DiamondsTen of ClubsSix of Clubs
The Turn
Eight of Diamonds

In the above example, the flop gave you a Ten-high straight. However, the turn reveals an Eight of Diamonds. The turn card is a counterfeit as it makes possible for anyone holding a Seven to make the same Ten-high straight that you currently possess. Furthermore, anyone with J-Q or 7-J will make an even more powerful Queen-high or Jack-high straight.
